History of the park
The sakura park named after Cijune Sugihara began its existence on October 2001, 2. An avenue of 200 Japanese sakura trees was planted next to the National Art Gallery and the Swedbank building on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Japanese diplomat's birth. The planted cherry trees are a gift from the Japanese government to the city of Vilnius.
Japanese diplomat Ch. Sugihara in 1939 in November moved from Finland to Kaunas and established a Japanese consulate. During the Second World War, he helped about 6 thousand. Lithuanian, Polish and German Jews to escape from Europe by issuing them transit visas to Japan. This is Ch. Sugihara did so despite a ban from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the help of the Polish secret services.
