Vilnius city municipalities The council approved the acquisition of a plot of approximately 5,5 ares through private negotiations. After the council's decision, an appraisal of the plot's value will be ordered and negotiations will be held with the owner regarding the terms of purchase and sale.
Previously, it was planned to initiate procedures for taking over for public needs for this plot. However, it was assessed that the detailed plan does not plan to take over this plot for public needs, therefore, the detailed plan must be adjusted (amended), which could take several years. In order to avoid a long and complicated process, due to which the reconstruction of the intersection would not be able to continue for at least the next few years, it was decided to take an alternative - to buy out the land plot.
Although the planned acquisition area is small, it is important in order to implement the most economically and urbanistically rational reconstruction option. This is the second stage of the reconstruction, during which a car overpass will be built over Gariūnai Street and a separate pedestrian overpass will be installed above the current intersection. After implementing the reconstruction and eliminating the only traffic light intersection between Vilnius and Klaipėda, uninterrupted transport traffic will be ensured, and smoother traffic will help avoid congestion at the exit from the capital.
The first stage of the reconstruction of the Gariūnai intersection was completed in the fall of 2023. During this period, a roundabout with Paneriškių Street was installed, rainwater and water sewage networks were reconstructed, street lighting was installed, and pedestrian and bicycle paths were built. It is expected that the second stage will begin in 2026 and be completed by 2028.
