A place for a columbarium is being prepared in the Antakalnis cemetery of the capital, management work will begin at this place, it was announced on Friday Vilnius city municipality.
As reported, the territory of the Antakalnis cemetery with an area of one hectare near the Menininkai hill towards Šilo Street will be managed. In the future, this space will be adapted for the burial of urns. Maintenance work at the cemetery will begin in early September and continue until mid-December. They will be performed by the company "Beam".
The planned territory will include two blocks, which will be connected by a 2,5 m wide path. Rest areas will be formed along the main trail - benches, trash cans, and lighting will be installed.
Pedestrian paths will appear in the area, the environment will be improved - dead trees and trees in poor condition will be removed. A total of 15 trees will be removed, while mature and valuable trees will be preserved, the statement said.
According to the municipality, several places are planned in the territory where, if necessary, columbariums could appear. They would be built according to a separate project.
The Antakalnis cemetery, founded more than 200 years ago, was previously known as the Soldiers' Cemetery. Lay people were buried in different areas, soldiers, orphans, later victims of the First World War. After connecting them, a single cemetery was formed.
The cemetery is divided into blocks, one of them, the 25th block, is called Menininkai kelnel. This is an exceptional burial place, where since the XNUMXth century writers, artists, actors, and musicians are still being buried.
Many people visit the artists' hill every day. Some come to visit or clean up the graves of their relatives, others come as if to an open-air museum, reminding of outstanding Lithuanian people who have passed away.
