The start of Vilnius' year as the European Green Capital brought innovations to the city - an impressive installation "City - an unfolding flower" created from waste by artist Jolita Vaitkutė was presented in the center of the capital. This work of art symbolizes the ideas of sustainability and invites Vilnius residents and guests of the city to think about responsible consumption and their relationship with nature.
"The title of European Green Capital 2025, awarded by the European Commission, is an opportunity to be proud of the work done - from environmental initiatives to sustainable urban development solutions. This award is not only an appreciation, but also a responsibility - to strive for higher standards every day, boldly undertake new projects and inspire other cities to achieve sustainability goals," says the Mayor of Vilnius Valdas Benkunskas.
Materials used for the work: waste found in the city
Vilnius city municipalities The installation, a bee created by artist Jolita Vaitkutė, was created using waste found in the city. The materials for the installation were provided by the city's waste management company "Beam" and the waste management company "Ekobāze".
"The topic of greenness and sustainability is extremely broad and all-encompassing, so sometimes it becomes difficult for people to encompass everything. I try to contribute to this understanding visually, using my works so that people can better understand these issues. I chose materials that fully participate in recycling cycles - these are city garbage that has temporarily stopped in this cycle, but will soon return to it again. For example, city benches, car tires, plastic or metal structures," says the author of the installation.
Marina Curko-Notkuvienė, director of Ekobaže, hopes that the installation will not only decorate the capital, but also become an important reminder to everyone that everyone's daily actions have an impact on the environment.
"This installation "City - an unfolding flower" is a great example of how waste can be given a new life. The installation was made from waste tires and recycled plastic, which, after the project is completed, will be recycled again and used to create new products. This clearly shows that waste can be given another life and become a symbol of creativity, inspiration and sustainability," says M. Curko - Notkuvienė.
The bee is a symbol of sustainability and connection with nature
The installation's main focus is the bee, which was not chosen by chance. Bees are an essential part of the natural ecosystem, and their life in the city testifies to greenery and a harmonious connection with nature.
"For most Lithuanians, the image of a beehive and the symbolism of bees' hard work are very close and self-evident. In Vilnius, bees are also finding their place - beehives have already been established on the city's rooftops, to which bees fly to carry out their important mission. This is a great example of how the urban environment can harmonize with nature. Here, bees become not only a part of nature, but also a symbol, reminding us that the city is like a ring to which they fly, nurturing life," says J. Vaitkutė.
Vilnius residents and city guests can view the installation dedicated to the year "Vilnius – European Green Capital 2025" from January 23. Lukiškiai square.
