The Lithuanian capital has received another important international recognition – the prestigious UK travel magazine Wanderlust has included Vilnius in the list of the greenest and most sustainable travel destinations in Europe for 2025. Travel Green List EuropeThe city was selected from hundreds of assessed locations and was among just 17 cities and regions that meet the highest sustainability standards.
The capital was appreciated for its abundance of green spaces, harmoniously developed infrastructure and consistent efforts to foster the city's biodiversity. As much as 70 percent of Vilnius' territory consists of green zones, with more than 140 km of bicycle paths and almost 1500 km of pedestrian routes stretching through the city.
Initiatives such as a 100 km trail around Vilnius, connecting natural and cultural sites of the city, and free drinking water stations installed throughout the capital were also highlighted.
The Wanderlust list is an important international assessment, confirming that consistent urban greening and sustainable initiatives yield tangible results. Vilnius is increasingly establishing itself as an attractive and responsible travel choice. It is no coincidence that this recognition was announced precisely in the year when we are the European Green Capital 2025 – it inspires us to continue the sustainable development of the city and be an example for other European cities,” says the Mayor of Vilnius Valdas Benkunskas.
The rating was published in the 2025 list of recommendations compiled by Wanderlust magazine, which focuses on sustainable tourism and responsible travel. It is one of the most well-known travel publications in the United Kingdom, reaching more than 1,2 million readers worldwide each year.
