Debris has been removed from the crash site of the Boeing 737 plane. Police hands over the protection of the territory to shooters. However, it is forbidden to get near certain objects - destroyed houses and burnt cars. The police arrested residents who maliciously disobeyed the officers' instructions, walked behind the STOP lanes and tried to take things out of the area. Protocols are written for them. The LNK journalist talked about this with representatives of the Rifle Association and the Police Department.
- What is still prohibited and what should residents who might want to come to inquire or take a walk know?
- It is forbidden to go beyond the police STOP lane. Access to the area itself is prohibited as it may violate people's privacy or interfere with the investigation. Curiosity can be fully satisfied from afar, from the STOP bar. Of course, the situation is of interest to both journalists and ordinary people, because it is an exceptional event. For me, as a citizen of Vilnius, this is the first time, God willing, and the last. Understandably, people are curious.
- How long is it planned to protect this territory?
– There is a schedule until December 5, maximum – until December 6.
- Next, the LNK journalist continued the conversation with R. Matonis, a representative of the Police Department
- Currently, there is still some protection left, we are helped by our social partners - the volunteers of the Rifle Association and the Public Security Service. The removal of the major parts was completed over the weekend, all the wreckage has already been removed, and the inspection of the scene has been completed. Next, the municipality negotiates about the physical protection of the house, because the residents' property is there. Until the residents return, the property must be protected.
- Have decisions been made regarding the buildings that are currently in ruins and are being protected?
- It is more a question of the competence of the municipality, because the police will no longer be there. A Security Service is likely to be hired to protect residents' property pending further decisions.
- Have there been any malicious trespassers trying to gain access to the site in the past week? Maybe people tried to pick something up or ignored instructions?
- There were definitely some curious and malicious people. The non-malevolent ones were asked to leave the area, the malicious ones were given protocols for crossing the STOP lane.
- What could be the consequences for citizens who try to enter areas fenced off with STOP strips?
– Currently, the area with STOP lanes is reduced to a minimum area. If there is a STOP lane, you cannot cross it. However, the crash site is already publicly accessible, as far as I know, media representatives and civilians visit it. Now only the house is protected.
- Were there any unforeseen difficulties during the removal of the debris?
- The biggest challenge was to find a place where the largest parts of the wreckage could be stored. Keeping parts of this size as evidence is extremely rare. However, everything was resolved, a suitable location was found and the wreckage is being stored. This, of course, was the first such case - a plane crash. It was necessary to inspect the scene, so we had to face some unconventional challenges. Officials from Latvia, Estonia and experts from civil aviation joined the work. We all managed the situation successfully together.
- As you already mentioned, it was an extraordinary case, but the police were basically prepared for it, action plans were prepared. After such an event, we always evaluate what could be improved.
- After each such unconventional event, we analyze our actions, consider what we could have done better. The most important thing is not to be afraid to admit mistakes, if there were any, and make sure they don't happen again in the future.
