To mark the European Day of Jewish Culture, the graffiti artwork "The Merchant" was unveiled on Sunday. This is already the fourth work in the street art project "Sienos pisimena", dedicated to the historical memory of the Jewish quarter.
The concept of the "Sienos prisimena" project is the creation of graffiti works based on authentic photographs from the Jewish quarter, taken before the Second World War. The project aims to bring back the moments of the life of the Jewish quarter to the same streets where that life boiled.
The drawing on Mėsinių Street is based on a photo from the interwar period, which captures a pot seller who sold in the Jewish Quarter. The work was unveiled in the presence of the people of Vilnius gathered for the tour and the participation of representatives of the Jewish community.
"It was great to meet so many warm looks and receive so much support. We really felt that such a project is necessary for Vilnius and the people of Vilnius", say the authors of the idea, artists Lina Šlipavičiūtė-Černiauskienė and Lauryna Kiškytė. The project "Sienos prisimena" is financed by the funds of the "Kuriu Vilnių" program of the Vilnius municipality. According to the organizers, it is planned to create one more - the fifth - graffiti work in the coming weeks.
