Last week we wrote that Naugarduko st. remained without the so-called "traveling yards". According to the municipality, they have now been removed for repairs and should return elsewhere in the future. Some residents are skeptical about this news and many claim that the patios were unnecessary, while others are upset that parking spaces will be restored in place of the patios. At the end of the week, the author of the idea, Gilma Teodora Gylytė, stood up to defend this idea, she was seconded by the former mayor of the city. architect Mindaugas Pakalnis. MadeinVilnius.lt's editors received a letter from the author of the idea of the Naugarduk market, who expressed her opinion about traveling courtyards.
As the initiator of the market, Rita Latvytė has seen the courtyards more than once and more than twice. According to her, they have become part of the life of the New Town community, and residents actively used them during the Sunday market. There were various attractions and events, children and schoolchildren sang here, and young people sat down to drink coffee or eat street food. However, not everything sounds as perfect as it might seem at first glance.
"The problem is that nobody looked after them and it wasn't even clear who was responsible for them: the council, "Beam”, the municipality or someone else. Therefore, of course, after someone stole the lighting bulbs and chairs, after the flowers in the pots withered, and nobody did even minimal maintenance, the courtyards gradually fell into disrepair. In addition, they did their job also because the Crafts Square was opened a few years ago, where it is perhaps more pleasant to sit down than on the street near the traffic," writes the founder of the Sunday market.
The woman is happy that, thanks to the changes, Naugarduka st. the market became a symbolic gathering place for the population. The market itself existed earlier on A. Vivulskios and Vytenios streets. in the courtyards, but only after the presentation of the street humanization project, the architects proposed to move it directly to the street, at the same time closing the street traffic for four hours, so the market became more visible, larger and more convenient.
According to R. Latvytė, more city districts could come up with similar activities that would help bring the district community together. However, if courtyards could help to achieve this goal, they should be established in different parts of the city.
"I wish for the courtyards themselves not to disappear, but, after consultation with the communities, to appear in other places where they can continue to invite people to come and hang out." I also wish to become supervised. There will always be skeptics, but there are more people who quietly care. In general, I sometimes want to ask critics - what do you use then and what makes you happy? It seems to me that only children's playgrounds are actively used in the city, and it is still very difficult to interest adults and seniors in something", - we read in the letter sent by R. Latvytė.
At the same time, we remind you that the Naugarduk market takes place on Sundays. Here, Vilnius residents are invited to buy various fresh products from farmers: dairy products, baked goods, vegetables, handicrafts, etc.
