The municipality assures that it will maintain the sewage networks of the Old Town. Vilnius residents have been asking for this renovation for several years: in some places the sewage system is clogged, which causes a stench. Previously, guests of one of the Old Town hotels complained about the stench tourists.
"Currently, it is planned to reconstruct the sewage networks on J. Basanavičiaus, Vokiečių, Trakų, Barboras Radvilaitė and Maironio streets. Rainwater sewage networks will be installed on these streets; until now, rainwater has been flowing into a common municipal sewage network," says Gabrielius Grubinskas, Vilnius city municipalities Media relations specialist.
As the city municipality explains, the reconstruction should reduce the load on the pipelines and the risk of flooding during heavy rains.
However, the municipality has not specified a specific date for the reconstruction of the sewage networks. It is planned that the sewage network maintenance work will be carried out together with other street infrastructure renovation works. This will last for the next few years.
