Spring weekends are back, and with them, residents take to the streets. It's no secret that the reconstructed Neris embankment has become a center of attraction for Vilnius residents for several years: many people spend their free time here on weekends. It is unfortunate that where there is a large flow of people, a large amount of garbage is guaranteed. These piles of garbage often become an exclusive feast for crows, and the coast begins to resemble a garbage dump.
Residents began sharing photos of overflowing trash cans on social media. Some laughed that Gediminas Hill could be seen in the background of the trash, while others were horrified by the sight.
Although residents saw this scene over the weekend, by Monday the area had already been cleaned up and there was literally no trace of garbage left.
“There are both underground and above-ground containers at this location. The underground containers are intended for household waste, so no problems were noticed with them. Meanwhile, the above-ground containers are used by a commercial facility, separately handling production and packaging waste. The situation was checked on Monday morning, at which time the containers had already been emptied,” says Gabrielius Grubinskas, Vilnius city municipalities Media Relations Representative.
This time, the municipality not only checked to see if there was any garbage left, but also spoke to the businessmen, who were supposed to ensure that a similar situation would not happen again in the future.
"Businessmen have been talked into increasing the frequency of garbage collection or ensuring a sufficient number of containers," adds a municipal representative.
And if a similar situation arises - and not only on the banks of the Neris River - residents are urged to contact the municipality.
