After a fire at a waste sorting plant in Vilnius, a fire broke out at a cogeneration power plant in Kaunas. Initially, lithium batteries were blamed, but investigators no longer confirm this version. The head of the Vilnius plant suspects that an explosive brought in with the waste could have caused the fire there.
A fire broke out in Vilnius more than a week ago fire caused millions in damage to the waste management plant.
The manager says at least one sorting line will open next week, but the full resumption of operations at the plant could take until the New Year.
"The capacity was about 800 tons per day. One line - about 230-260 tons. We plan to be able to process that much inside the plant per day," said Algirdas Blazgys, director of the Energesman waste recycling plant.
The cause of this fire is also still under investigation, but the manager has suspicions.
"There is a huge hole in the concrete wall - down to the reinforcement. It looks like it is a sign of an explosion. We do not believe that a battery or a vape could cause such damage to a concrete structure," said A. Blazgys.
A. Blazgys compares the situation to the Ikea fire, where a terrorist attack was carried out.
"It's almost like there was an intentional explosion. It looks like there was an explosive device there. The shutdown of our factory is a much bigger damage and emergency situation for the region and the country than Ikea," said the director of the Energesman waste recycling plant.
Both fires – both in Vilnius and Beautiful – law enforcement is investigating. No version has been confirmed yet.
