Mayor of Vilnius Valdas Benkunskas seeks to ensure that municipal public order officers have the right to measure the speed of scooters and similar vehicles and monitor compliance with the Road Traffic Rules.
According to him, the municipality has already applied to the Seimas to have the legal acts adjusted accordingly.
"There are enormous speeds, people are driving with their faces covered and not looking at anyone. Here, there are a few minutes before disaster. We are starting preventive work together with police"We appreciate micromobility measures in Vilnius and see the benefits, but there will definitely be no tolerance for those who abuse them and pose a danger to themselves and others," he said. V. Benkunskas.
This is what he said in Vilnius, at White bridge, after the municipality and police conducted a special preventive raid on Friday afternoon targeting those traveling on scooters and similar vehicles.
"If there is no education, no preventive activities, no one-off fines and demonstrations, we will have a worsening situation," the mayor said about drivers of powerful electric scooters and bicycles who do not follow the rules and ride on sidewalks.
V. Benkunskas said that he would not like to follow the example of Paris, where scooters completely banned.
During the campaign, police officers stopped scooter riders and cyclists who were violating traffic rules and warned them about violations: children were riding scooters without helmets, cyclists were overtaking pedestrians at excessive speed.
Only two young people riding electric motorcycles experienced more serious problems. One of them is an adult, the other is only fifteen.
The 18-year-old was riding on a bike path, although such vehicles can only be driven on streets. He was issued a report for driving without a license and for the fact that the motorcycle was unregistered, without a technical inspection, and uninsured. When asked if he regretted his driving, he said he did not.
Officers will discuss the minor's motorcycle riding with his parents.
Traffic police officers said that the problem of electric motorcycles is increasing in large cities, especially Vilnius.
