The Vilnius City Council decided to transfer the 30 sq.m. m area fountain, the maintenance of which has been the responsibility of the municipality until now. In this way, the issues of fountain dependence and maintenance are legally settled.
The fountain, designed by sculptor Gediminas Karalias and architect Algimantas Nasvytis in 1987, has been out of use for a long time, its architectural part was dismantled in 2013, in preparation for Lithuania's presidency of the Council of the European Union. Initially, flower gardens were installed here, later it was covered with awnings with a historical map of Europe, and it was considered to completely dismantle it.
According to the municipality's information, the Seimas Chancellery plans to receive funds from the state and private foundations for the reconstruction of the fountain. After handing over the fountain to the Chancellery of the Seimas, there is an opportunity to revive the fountain in the near future so that it once again pleases the eyes of city residents and guests, thus improving the aesthetic view of the central part of the city and the representative Independence Square.
