In September, thousands of students from all over Lithuania and abroad came to study in the capital. Taking care of the safety of every citizen of Vilnius, the city municipality is preventively starting to distribute potassium iodide to high school students who are not yet registered in the capital, which might be needed only in case of a real disaster at the Astravas NPP.
From October 25 until November 12 Higher education institutions can collect the medicinal product intended for them (according to the need submitted to the municipality) at even 124 pharmacies in Vilnius and hand it over to their students who came to Vilnius from other cities or foreign countries. 47 units are allocated to students who came to the capital to study but are not registered here. potassium iodide tablets (950 packages).
Tablets are distributed to students, as well as to other residents of Vilnius, on the order of the Ministry of Health as a preventive measure due to the nearby Belarusian Astravos nuclear power plant (PPP), protecting against the threat of a possible accident. Astravos NPP is 45 kilometers from the city of Vilnius. This means that Vilnius falls within a radius of 100 km, where residents may need iodine in the event of a radiation accident. In order for the population to consume them in time for the protection of the thyroid gland potassium iodide tablets, they are distributed in advance.
Higher education institutions are responsible for the withdrawal and distribution of the preparation to those studying in Vilnius, and they themselves will decide how to distribute the rest of the iodine tablets - they can be distributed to newly enrolled students and students who have returned after the termination of their studies.
Students are given a two-day dose of iodine (4 tablets), intended for use only in the event of a real emergency, when the need to use iodine tablets would be announced officially: by sirens, messages to mobile phones, radio, television and other means of disseminating information. State-level institutions, such as the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, the Ministry of Health, etc., would be informed.
Students should keep the received tablets in Vilnius, they do not need to be carried every time when returning to their declared place of residence, because in the event of an accident, it would be relevant to use iodine while in the territory of the Vilnius municipality. The storage of potassium iodide is described in the information (use) leaflet of the medicinal product. Pharmacists also provide additional advice.
