Thursday in Vilnius old town turned into a military zone - due to events dedicated to the inauguration of the German 45th Armored Brigade "Lietuva", some streets of the central capital were closed, and Cathedral Square was filled with German and Lithuanian soldiers and armored vehicles. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is also attending the ceremony.
According to the Ministry of National Defence (MND), this ceremony is not only a symbolic but also a practical sign that the German brigade is officially starting its operations in Lithuania. During such an inauguration, the military unit solemnly presents itself to the public and partners for the first time.
"The inauguration of the brigade is a significant moment for both Germany and Lithuania. It marks strong bilateral cooperation and strengthening of security in the eastern NATO "on the flange," the KAM statement said.
During the ceremony On the Cathedral Square About a thousand German and Lithuanian soldiers will line up. A ribbon symbolizing the mission in Lithuania will be officially attached to the brigade flag.
Residents are invited to watch military equipment and orchestras
Since the morning, a military equipment exhibition has been open in Cathedral Square, attracting Vilnius residents and city guests. You can see the armored vehicles that the brigade will be equipped with up close and chat with the soldiers.
After the official part, a joint group of German and Lithuanian military orchestras will perform in the square, performing both marches and well-known musical pieces.
Traffic is restricted for safety reasons
Due to the security of the event in the capital in the old town Traffic restrictions are in place – streets around Cathedral Square are closed, and in some places traffic is being diverted public transport routes. Vilnius Municipality urges residents and visitors to be patient and plan their trips in advance.
