Vilnius intends to gradually implement a container system for collecting food waste, LRT television reported on Saturday.
"The city will gradually switch to a food waste collection system using containers," Vilnius Municipality spokesperson Eglė Bernotavičienė told LRT.
According to her, the containers will first appear in the city's third waste collection zone - Naujininkai-Paneriai, where the containers should be installed in the second quarter of this year.
Currently, Vilnius residents can sort food waste in orange bags, which, after being tightly tied, must be thrown into mixed municipal waste containers.
As the municipality reported on Friday, since the new food waste sorting procedure came into effect last year, Vilnius residents have collected over 2,8 thousand tons of food waste in orange bags in just over a year.
According to the capital's municipality, from February 1, Vilnius residents can collect five rolls of orange bags for free, which should be enough for a year. Citizens who do not yet sort their food waste can also collect a free container-bucket.
The city emphasizes that from February, food waste sorting tools will be distributed only in neighborhoods and Vilnius bulky waste collection sites.
All organic waste can be thrown into orange food waste sorting bags - fruit and vegetable peels, rinds, shavings, food scraps, coffee grounds, tea leaves, paper towels, houseplants and their parts.
