A huge monument of A. Mickevičius has sprouted on the steps of the Vilnius Town Hall

On Monday morning, a 6-meter tall monument to Adam Mickevičius was erected on the steps of the Vilnius City Hall. This is the largest exhibit of the Vilnius Museum exhibition "Unrealized Projects of the XNUMXth Century Vilnius", which opens this week.

The monument to Adam Mickevičius, created by the sculptor Zbigniew Pronaszko in 1922, is one of the many projects in Vilnius that never became a reality. July 21 The exhibition opening its doors at the Vilnius Museum will present more than a hundred urban, architectural, memorial and engineering projects created in the last century, which could have significantly changed the face of Vilnius, but were not implemented.

Discussions about monuments in Vilnius - already in the interwar period

Z. Pronaszko offered to build a 12-meter-high monument to the poet, cast from bronze or concrete in the town hall square. The monument was supposed to be twice as tall as the model that appeared in the center of Vilnius on Monday morning.

"The Mickevičius monument in Vilnius has been dreamed of since the nineteenth century, but there was a long disagreement over the perpetuation of such a significant personality for the city," says Rasa Antanavičiūtė, one of the curators of the exhibition.

The committee for the construction of the monument to A. Mickevičius and representatives of the Vilnius authorities decided that the monument to Z. Pronaszko was too modern and not suitable for the city, but the newly formed alternative committee took the initiative. Thanks to him, the model of the monument in its original size was erected on the right bank of the Neris, near the current Sports Palace.

The construction of the sculptor's sketch was accompanied by stormy public debates. The layout of the poet's monument incited the interwar Vilnius society. For some, it seemed unacceptable, scaring the people of Vilnius with its scale and appearance, while for others, the modern and unusual forms of the monument testified to the relevance of the poet for "these times".

Although in 1924 The model of the monument to A. Mickevičius designed by Z. Pronaszko was erected in Vilnius, two more competitions were held, the winner of which would have the monument to the poet built in the city.

The contests heated up the public even more and the polemic regarding the form and space of perpetuating the poet's memory did not stop for many years. Silent discussions and lack of funds delayed the construction of the monument - during the interwar period, the monument to the poet never appeared in the city.

"Some places or objects in Vilnius, for example, Lukiški Square, the stadium or the ruined part of the Raduškevičius palace, are as if under a spell - more than one vision and project were created for them, but so far they have not been able to be implemented. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to get acquainted with more projects of such intriguing places in Vilnius", says the curator of the exhibition Marija Drėmaitė.

The exhibition includes everything from drawings to video projections

The projects of the aforementioned competitions are exhibited in the exhibition of the Vilnius Museum, together with a large number of other urban utopias. In the halls of the museum, visitors will see drawings, 3D models of some buildings on the map of Vilnius, photo and video manipulations. Children will be able to build their future Vilnius from specially made blocks.

In autumn, the content of the exhibition will be complemented by a detailed book of the unrealized Vilnius, a series of lectures and meetings, and a virtual route that can be tried in reality. The exhibition will open its doors to visitors on July 21, at the Vilnius Museum, Vokiečių st. 6., and will work until January 2022, 9.

The curators of the exhibition are architectural historians, Vilnius University professor dr. Marija Drėmaitė and art researcher, Vilnius Museum director dr. Rasa Antanavičiūtė has been researching the public spaces and urbanism of the capital and other cities for many years.

The Vilnius Museum is a new space for getting to know the capital, presenting unique and unknown yet relevant stories and stories of the city to city residents and guests.

Dynamic and constantly changing, like the city itself, the museum plans to present 2-3 exhibitions each year, based on authentic studies of urban life. The museum dedicated exclusively to Vilnius invites us to take a closer look at the environment that constantly surrounds us and to see something interesting and unexpected in it.
