7 terabytes, or 7 thousand gigabytes (GB) - this amount of data was transferred in a month by a camera with communication equipment installed in the Sugihara cherry park "Telia" in the center of Vilnius, Čiune, which ensured a live broadcast of Japanese cherry blossoms in 4K resolution. This is a record amount of data sent per month by one mobile communication card in Lithuania.
"We have customers who transfer extremely large amounts of data via unlimited mobile internet. But mostly they download the data. At that time, the equipment that ensured the live broadcasting of cherry blossoms practically always only sent data. The daily flow of this data reached an average of 200 GB, and all 7 terabytes were captured in a month," says Saulius Kalashnikovas, Telia's video surveillance solutions expert.
He estimates that on average, 2-3 thousand people transfer that much mobile data per month.
According to S. Kalashnikov, it was a challenge to ensure uninterrupted 4K resolution broadcast via mobile connection, even on the fastest Telia 4G LTE network in Lithuania. "This broadcast took place on a live network that our other customers were using at the same time. So we had to find a solution so that such a data-intensive broadcast would take place without interruption and it would not affect other users," says the Telia expert.
Vilnius city municipalities and tens of thousands of people took advantage of the opportunity provided by Telia to see cherry blossoms online.
"Since the spring attraction of Vilnius residents, the sakura park, had to be fenced this year due to the quarantine and the danger of gathering, the annual tradition of selfies against the background of flowers was replaced by a live broadcast at home. Considering the people's interest, the experiment really succeeded - the positive emotions that the cherry blossoms evoke every spring, this year, thanks to technology, moved to the homes of the people of Vilnius or even to hospitals, and reached those who could not physically see the cherry blossoms," says Eglė Radvilė, advisor to the director of the Vilnius municipality administration. IT issues.
A subpage of the website created just for the municipality's quarantine https://quarantine.lt/sakuras/ received over 30 thousand visitors and was the most popular page of the entire site. The live broadcast was also held in the Facebook group #susijunigam, and it was possible to watch it on the TV screen by selecting channel zero on Telia TV.
About 80 viewers watched the live broadcast of the cherry blossoms at one time, with an average viewing time of about a minute. The broadcast took place from April 9 to May 7.
