In Vilnius, near the Pūčkiori outcrop, the slope of the Vilnius embankment will be maintained - due to prolonged autumn rains, a section of the educational trail of several tens of meters is in danger of sinking into the river.
Jolanta Radžiūnienė, head of Pavilniai and Verkių Regional Parks Directorate, tells BNS that the biggest threat is to the 180-meter-long river slope near the Pūčkiori manor - landslides have already reached the educational trail.
"In the last few days, the slope has been very slippery, it has already slid all the way to the road. Therefore, there is a threat that the road may fall into the river. Our initial desire was to stop the erosion, but it looks like there will be emergency liquidation until we go through the procurement procedures. The river is very swollen, there is a lot of water, there is a bend and it is gnawing the bank very much. We see an obvious threat to people", said J. Radžiūnienė.
According to her, over 70 special piles will be dug in the section of the slope washed away by the river, right next to the bank, in order to strengthen the slope. It is true that the Environmental Protection Department of the Vilnius region is reluctant to allow the works to be carried out until January 1, until the salmon that came here have spawned.
"But if the asphalt collapses, the pieces of asphalt that are carried away can also harm the salmon themselves. Now there are still 30 centimeters to go to that road, but we will go to talk to residents, put up signs warning of the danger, talk to road users," she said.
According to the head of the Parks Directorate, the works will likely cost tens of thousands of euros.
On Wednesday, the Pūčkiori dam in an emergency condition was also strengthened - an island made of sandbags in the middle of the channel, fish travel up the river through the fish channels installed on the sides of the dam. J. Radžiūnienė states that the owners of the Belmont complex, which is a favorite of the people of Vilnius, have in turn installed lights with motion sensors in order to protect themselves from poachers.
The dam is managed by the company "Tiltuva", the work is being carried out in a hurry before the ice forms. The renovation was opposed by environmentalists, who also claimed it would harm salmon. These works may cost the Vilnius municipality about 200 thousand. euros.
