In the district court of the city of Vilnius, unprecedented capital repair works have begun.
Construction workers have been working in the court building located at 79A Laisvės Ave. in the capital since the end of October 2023.
According to the project "Improving Quality, Services and Infrastructure in Lithuanian Courts" carried out by the National Court Administration, it is planned to reorganize the public spaces of the Vilnius City District Court, adapting them for more convenient service to citizens and more efficient work of the court.
The building of the largest court of Lithuania was completed in 2005, but until now it has not yet received repairs of such a scale, when the transformation of the court's public premises, their engineering systems and networks is complexly resolved.
"Since 2006 February, when three district courts moved into this administrative building, since 2013. operating as a single legal entity - Vilnius City District Court, the court premises have never been repaired, therefore some public spaces no longer meet the needs of modern court visitors, are morally outdated, - said the president of the court, Viktorija Šelmienė. - We aim to make one of the largest courts in Europe comfortable for the visitor, so we have focused a lot of attention on the renovation of the Document Management and Information Office, Acquaintance with cases premises, we will install additional courtrooms so that court sessions can be held more quickly.
During the renovation, the court lobby, corridors and lounges for public use on all floors will be fundamentally renovated, 11 courtrooms will be repaired and newly equipped, a new access control and video surveillance system will be installed, rooms for familiarization with cases will be installed on the first floor, sanitary units will be repaired, a child's room will be installed and the parents' room, and the toilets are adapted for the needs of the disabled.
Although intensive repair work has begun, the court's daily activities will definitely not stop. True, after All Souls' Day, all visitors will enter the court not through the usual main door, but through the temporary entrance B from the left side of the building.
From now on, the premises of the document management and information office will be located on the basement floor of the building, where court employees are ready to receive all documents and answer visitors' questions.
Adjacent to the Document Management and Information Office, court visitors will easily find a locker room and public toilets, and they will be able to access the meeting rooms on the other floors by stairs and dedicated elevators. Access to the courthouse for people with disabilities is through entrance D, located by the parking lot.
"Undoubtedly, the repair, which will last more than half a year, is a big challenge for both court employees and court visitors, - said the President of the Court, V. Šelmienė. "However, we are making maximum efforts so that the direct work of the court is hindered as little as possible."
The repair works of the court building are carried out by MB "Virmalda". The builders promised that by 2024 July 1 the largest court in Lithuania will already be modernized and ready to welcome visitors in the changed public spaces.
