Vilnius residents proposed a name for the planned public space between Giedraičiai and Kintos streets in the capital - out of nearly 3. of those who voted online, the majority favored the name Šnipiškių Square.
In the advisory survey organized by the municipality, 18 percent chose this name. participants. In second place was the proposal to call the space Jurgis Viščaks Square (13,6%). Šiaudinė Park (13,1%) and Kintos Square (10%) followed.

"One of the oldest parts of the city of Vilnius continues to change and modernize. Finally, a public green space will appear here, where not only community members, but also city guests can gather. I am glad that the people of Vilnius chose the name very actively and were interested in the project itself. The part of Vilnius city located on the right bank of the Neris River is being developed rapidly. A new public space will appear in the former area of metal garages, and the area itself will be renovated and given new life," says Deputy Mayor Vytautas Mitalas.
Šnipiškės, as a part of the city, began to form in the XNUMXth century, after the construction of a bridge over the Neris. The name of this part of the city comes from the XNUMXth century. the manor of Povilas Michailović Šnipkas, which stood here.

Variants of names were proposed by the most active residents of Šnipiškii district, old-timers, and elders for the survey organized by the capital municipality. Jurgis Viščaks Square was proposed to name this area in his memory, because he, the pioneer of world laser physics, was born and grew up on Daugėliškis street.
The name of Šiaudinė square was also proposed for the new public space, because the square is in the center of three historical streets - 1st Šiaudinė (current Lvovo st.), 2nd Šiaudinė (current Krakuvas st.) and 3rd Šiaudinė (current Daugėliškios st.) .
Vilnius residents also suggested their own names. Of the 60 presented, some of the more interesting ones are Skansen, Aitvarau, Rytojaus, Inovacijų, Laimė or World Lithuanian Square, many recorded various variations of the names of Shanghai, offered to call them Contrasts, Harlem Square, others - after characters from animated series, movies or comics.

In the updated more than 8 thousand sq. m area, a square for events will be designed, pedestrian paths, small architectural elements, plantings, lawns, lighting, children's playgrounds and sports fields and even an observation tower from which you can view the panorama of Šnipiškii will be installed. The shed next to the tower will be used for exhibitions, community gatherings, second-hand goods and other trades.
The results of the advisory survey will be of great help to the Commission on Names, Monuments and Plaques of the City of Vilnius, which will examine all proposals in the near future and make a final decision on how to name the new public space in Šnipiškės. The assembled commission is headed by city council member Gediminas Jaunius.
