Former head of Vilnius architect Mindaugas Pakalnis shared an interesting map on his Facebook account. It is from 1942, when Vilnius was occupied by fascist Germany. In it, you can see completely different district names than usual.
"Another interesting map of Vilnius. 1942 year. Vilnius has just been recaptured and is already occupied again. Pay attention to the place names - Sultoniškės, not Saltoniškės (the name comes from the Polish surname Soltan, so neither one nor the other is correct in principle), there is no Žirmūnė (an artificial place name that has nothing to do with Vilnius), but there are Kareiviškės and Mantiškės instead. Fishermen are clearly distinguished (we still use them now)", writes M. Pakalnis.
We will find even more interesting names on the map. Near Belmont was Popiškės and the recently revived part of the city of Vilnius - Paupys. By the way, it was already marked on the map of the city of Vilnius. The southern part of the town near Paneriai street was called Steponiškės, and the southwestern part of Naujininkai was called Kaminai.
"The current OZO PC is standing in Neujesi Gerviai (how nice :)). And in the lower left corner, the Pakalninkai carefully and modestly press on", - shares the architect.
Also, M. Pakalnis shares that earlier it was planned to return some of the names of the areas. However, some names remained only in general planning documents and can still be seen only on historical maps.
