The tragic story of S. Darius and S. Girėnas is an inseparable part of Lithuania's historical memory and identity. The daring adventure of the young pilots is etched in the minds of many as a heroic event. But not everyone knows the other side of this inspiring story and the fact that the origins of the transatlantic flight lie in a creative idea to raise the necessary funds for the flight. Commemorative stamps and envelopes were issued which were purchased JAV living Lithuanians contributed financially to the implementation of the idea. Darius and Girėnas transported letters to Lithuania in these envelopes during the historic flight. After the plane crashed, the found tarpaulin bags with letters reached their addressees in Lithuania in a record short time - within three days.
This story inspired the authors of the project to create a memorial sign for her.
The project, the implementation of which was supported Vilnius city municipality, the Union of Lithuanian Artists and the Sculpture and Stained Glass Center, contribute to the fact that the urban, industrial and visually poor territory of the airport will gradually acquire a modern image and eventually become a developed and constantly expanding cultural public space. The 7 m high artistic accent placed at the entrances of the sculpture and stained glass center marks the environment of the center and initiates the vision to fill this place with more artistic objects, thus developing the attraction center of culture and free creativity far from the city center.
