The city of Vilnius officially opened the doors of the new Lazdynai swimming pool - the capital's athletes tested the pool water, and the guests were presented with the space and equipment of the most modern swimming pool in the Baltic States, which all Vilnius residents and city guests will be able to try tonight.
Lazdynai swimming pool will start its normal operation from 17:10. Visitors to the complex, who have purchased tickets at the box office or online, will be able to try the Olympic-sized, 50-lane 8-meter swimming pool and the 25-lane 10-meter diving pool with a special air cushion. Next to the diving pool, there is also the only 7-meter tower of its kind in Lithuania for jumping into the water and XNUMX springboards.
"We all know that this was not an easy project, but today we can already celebrate. Athletes will have an excellent training base in Vilnius, and more importantly, we will be able to carry out the universal secondary swimming training program at full speed, even catching up with those who previously lacked pools for training. Anyway, everyone is welcome, let's get our bathing suits ready. Thanks to everyone, thanks to whom this great pool is already working", said the mayor of Vilnius Remigius Šimašius.
The complex will accommodate about 700 visitors at a time, and a total of about 4000 long-term memberships could be sold per year. Over 300 athletes will play sports in the pool at different times, over 1000 children will attend swimming training since March, and at least 1800 second-timers will join them in the fall.
"The project was difficult and faced many challenges, but the emotions of sports and the local community redeem everything. During the preparation for the opening, some athletes did not contain their emotions, because such a sports base has not existed in Lithuania until now. Today, we are happy to be able to offer them the training base they deserve. I believe that this swimming pool will raise more than one generation of water sports champions, and an incredible team of coaches will help to do this, including the swimmer Giedrius Titenis and his first teacher, the former coach of the Lithuanian national swimming team, Žilvinas Ovsiukas," said the Vice Mayor of Vilnius, who supervises sports issues in the capital. Valdas Benkunskas.
The Lazdynai pool will become a permanent sports base for swimmers, divers, water polo teams, pentathletes and triathletes. The complex is adapted not only for training, but also for sports events - it will host national and international water sports competitions, which can be watched by up to 1200 spectators.
"We congratulate the Vilnius city community on the opening of the long-awaited swimming pool. It is a festive day for the entire Lithuanian water sports family - swimmers, divers, representatives of figure swimming, water polo and other disciplines. We believe that this modern swimming pool will not only promote physical activity and health of the citizens of Vilnius, but will also contribute to programs of great importance to the Lithuanian Swimming Federation - teaching to swim, prevention of drowning and the training of highly skilled athletes. We hope that other sports infrastructure projects will move forward successfully, and swimming pools will become even more accessible to Vilnius residents", said Justas Kalinauskas, Secretary General of the Lithuanian Swimming Federation. The project was implemented in cooperation between the Vilnius City Municipality and the Ministry of the Interior. UAB "Vilniaus vystymo kompaniya" took care of the implementation of the Lazdyna basin project. The main contractor of the pool is Panevėžys statybos trestas AB.
