The municipality has been presented with project proposals that form the idea of reconstruction of the Antakalnis old cemetery complex. The main idea and goal of this project is to expand the burial territory of the Antakalnis cemetery. The cemetery, founded in 1809, was expanded 4 times, the last time the cemetery was expanded in 1915. It is planned to arrange this cemetery territory by installing paths and other necessary engineering infrastructure within the boundaries of the plot. Two options have been proposed for the reconstruction of the cemetery.
Option one: minimal intervention in the terrain
In this variant, when redeveloping the territory, it is proposed to install burial sites on steeper slopes, adapting to the existing terrain. Retaining walls are not planned on steeper slopes.
"To separate the blocks, 1,50 and 1,20 m block-paved block paths are planned, which are planned to protect mature valuable trees. 0,50 m wide passages are left between the graves. When performing minimal relief formation works, it is planned to install a 3-meter-wide block-paved path with a 50 cm wide technical sidewalk instead of the traveled forest road. The technical sidewalk is planned to install lighting for the main path. Since the path is planned at the lowest point of the territory, it is planned to install a rainwater collection system on the path. The installation of summer water supply necessary for the maintenance of the graves will also be addressed," the project proposals say about the ideas proposed for the first option.
It is also mentioned that three locations are planned in the aforementioned territory where columbariums could be built if needed. The columbariums would be designed in a separate project.

Option two: similar solutions, more space for pedestrians is planned
Similar to the first option, intervention into the territory is minimal, and no retaining walls are planned in the area.
The design proposals mention that the project includes road barriers – parking posts – to restrict the access of vehicles to the cemetery territory from Šilo Street, as priority is given to pedestrians in the cemetery territory. In order to mark the cemetery territory – the northern boundary of the plot is planned to be enclosed with an openwork fence.
It is also mentioned that three locations are planned in the aforementioned territory where columbariums could be built if needed. The columbariums would be designed in a separate project.
"A parking lot for temporary parking for visitors is planned on the plot at the entrance to the cemetery territory. Next to the lot, a place is planned for a modular container administrative - security guard building and a waste collection site," the proposal for the second option reads.

Final decision – after public hearing
Which option will be chosen for implementation will be determined after the public meeting.
