The European Commission (EC) announced on Thursday that it has approved the construction of a multifunctional complex with a national stadium construction in Vilnius amendments to the concession agreement – it provides for the provision of state aid to the project.
"Due to the coronavirus pandemic and Russia's aggressive military actions in Ukraine "The construction costs of the project have increased significantly, therefore, without additional support to cover part of the increased costs, the project would become financially unviable. Support will also be allocated to the works on the stadium and sports facilities that make up the complex, which were not originally planned, but are necessary for the project to better perform its function," the EC statement states.
"While other various actors were politicizing, lying, and manipulating, my team and I worked tirelessly to move this stalled project from its dead end and ultimately successfully complete it."
I just received news from the European Commission confirming that the project has been approved, which shows its transparency and legality, and we can move forward with its implementation.
Every cent has been counted. All procedures have been checked. And finally, I think this is the most researched and examined project in Lithuanian history.
Despite all the complaints, slander, and lies, the positive conclusion of the European Commission on this project is an undeniable iron fist for the transparency of this project.
"So, having finally completed all the procedures, formalities, and red tape, we can resume construction work and finally complete this project once and for all," says the Mayor of Vilnius City Valdas Benkunskas.
