Vilnius is developing a new tool for recording and maintaining unique wooden architecture. It will be constantly filled with 3D models of wooden buildings, drawings, photos, archival and other materials. It is hoped that the database will help Vilnius residents take better care of historical buildings and their details.
The data of wooden buildings and their details collected in the system created by the specialists of the municipal company "Vilniaus Planas" will allow for high-quality and accurate restoration of not only existing but also dilapidated buildings and their parts. The material will be available free of charge to residents who want to properly take care of their buildings.
The digital database will be able to be used for scientific research and education - it will serve architects, painters, heritage conservationists and other specialists.
Already now, in the heritage system being developed in 3D format, you can view one of the authentic Žvėrynas medinuks of the neo-baroque pediment (Pušų st. 26). In the database, you can also familiarize yourself with the historical building (Malonioji st. 17), where the poet Liudas Gira and the writer Jonas Marcinkevičius lived at different times.
The beauty of historic buildings lies not only in the volume, but also in the small details - from unique decoration elements, to windows, doors, paneling and even handles or hinges. When the above-mentioned details decay, the buildings lose part of their value or lose their architectural expression altogether, so the project aims not only to introduce the public to the trees, but also to help preserve them.
"The system being developed is an extremely accurate, virtual catalog of Vilnius' historical architecture and its elements. In the database, we paid the most attention to the authenticity of details - near many buildings, users will find information about windows, paneling, doors, handles or other fragments that are rapidly disappearing," Aurelijs Deksnys, head of the Geographical Information Systems Department of JSC "Vilniaus Planas", presents the system being developed.
"Since 2005, the Vilnius municipality has been preparing photogrammetric measurements of the most valuable wooden buildings, and since 2019 - precise measurements of wooden and metal architectural details. Due to the rapid development of the city, it is becoming more and more important to open this material to the public. This digital platform will make it possible to collect and present the data of historical buildings located throughout the territory of Vilnius - not only wooden ones, but also brick ones, as well as those that are not registered in the Register of Cultural Values, but have valuable details", comments the chief specialist of the Cultural Heritage Protection Department of the Vilnius Municipality. Živile Ratavičiūtė.
The database provides the possibility of inventorying, systematizing and cataloging buildings and their wooden and metal architectural details. During the measurements, repetitive types of windows, edgings, paneling and other elements are determined, so the collected measurement material will be able to be applied to the restoration of many buildings. It is expected that the citizens will also get involved in the process - the citizens of Vilnius will be able to freely use the material stored in the base and contribute to the preservation of sticks.
It is planned that the citizens of Vilnius will be able to use the digital architectural heritage system in 2022.
Already now, in the heritage system being created in 3D format, you can view one of the authentic wooden blocks of the neo-baroque pediment in Žvėrynas (Pušu st. 26). In the database, you can also familiarize yourself with the historical building (Malanoji st. 17), where poet Liudas Gira and writer Jonas Marcinkevičius lived at different times.
