In response to the fire that occurred at a waste sorting plant in the Vilnius region on April 27 and potential challenges related to waste management, Vilnius district The municipality declares an emergency. Members of the Vilnius District Municipality Emergency Situations Center met today to discuss possible solutions. Active cooperation is being carried out with UAB "VAATC" regarding waste collection and removal. It is being considered that waste could be removed to waste management companies in other cities.
"After assessing the information received from Vilnius district utility companies and due to the disruptions in waste management after the fire at the waste sorting plant, it was decided to propose to the mayor to declare an emergency situation in the Vilnius district. Our main task is to ensure proper continuity of essential services in the Vilnius district - the process of waste management does not stop," says Vytautas Vansavičius, Director of the Vilnius District Municipality Administration.
About 120 tons of unsorted, mixed municipal waste are collected daily in Vilnius district. Given the current emergency situation, it is very important that every resident contributes to optimizing waste management. If possible, we ask everyone to sort waste as much as possible, thus reducing the overall management burden and negative impact on the environment. Residents who do not have sorting containers can use common sorting containers.
The municipality is monitoring the situation and, if necessary, will take measures to ensure that residents and businesses experience as little temporary inconvenience as possible, however, due to the closure of the Vilnius region waste sorting plant and logistical changes, temporary disruptions to service provision are possible.
