The Trakai regional branch of the state forest office informs that from September 23 to October 10 the Varnikai educational trail is temporarily closed, where work will be carried out to manage trees uprooted and damaged by the wind.
The foresters ask to postpone trips along the Varniki educational trail during this period.
We remind you that in May, after 9 months of reconstruction, the Varniki educational trail was opened.
Located in the southern part of the Trakai Historical National Park, in the Trakai Forestry Office, in the Lentvaris Forestry, the Varniki Nature Reserve covers an area of about 611 hectares, most of which (450 ha) consists of forests and 207 ha of Ilgelis marsh. In the northern part of the reserve, on the shore of Skaištis Lake, there is a very old, 200-year-old oak grove growing on the hill! The nearby rustling naturally formed mixed forest also impresses with its centuries-old firs and pines. 30-60 years ago, young spruce and pine groves were planted on the edges of this forest. It is worth noting that a key forest habitat has been set aside in the Varniki Nature Reserve, that is, an area of forest unaffected by human activity, where endangered, rare or rare plant species can be found. Several habitats of the unified European ecological network of protected areas "Natura 2000" have been declared on the territory of the reserve.
The educational hiking trail leads not only through the forests of wonderful beauty, but also through the meadow, which enriches the diversity of the biotopes of the reserve, the impressive Ilgelis swamp and the small lakes that gather in it. For the convenience of visitors, the Trakai Forest Office has equipped gazebos with benches, three observation decks and ten rest stops in the most beautiful and hard-to-reach places of the reserve. Visitors walking along the trail are offered a rest, get acquainted with the information on the stands in Lithuanian and English about the local landscape and the peculiarities of its formation, about the Varniki Nature Reserve and the activities of the Trakai Forestry Office. One viewing platform of the educational trail offers an opportunity to admire the adjacent different ecotopes of the reserve: an oak forest rustles on the top of the hill, a mixed forest surrounds the slopes, and a wooded swamp gathers at the foot.
