The municipality of the capital invites all people who care about their city to participate in the aldermen's elections - participate in the elections themselves or vote for the alderman of their district. The first phase of the election begins already on November 4, when the registration of candidates begins. Vilnius residents will be able to vote for their chosen elder on November 18. - December 6 - then the residents will vote by e-mail. manner and in writing.
"The elder is an intermediate link between the eldership and the municipality. His task is to convey the residents' complaints and wishes to the council and to answer the residents' questions about what can be done to resolve the situation. It is not true that if an ordinary resident applies directly to the municipality, the person's complaint will be noticed faster. It is not uncommon for him to get lost among many others, and when addressing an elder, the answer can be received "here and now". The problem is that few people know this. I hope that the situation will be better after the elections", says Mantas Mikšta, an elder of Naujamiestis.
Unlike aldermen, who are appointed by the city administration, aldermen take their positions based on the principle of trust of the residents - they are elected. Anyone who wants to make changes, who is not afraid of responsibility and who is dedicated to representing the community can apply for this position.
"In our residential area, we know best in which stairwell a person with mobility difficulties lives, where residents want new trees or where it is best to build a new children's playground. Elders are like the eyes and ears of the elder, who are the first to know and pass on the most important news to the elder. So if you know an active and social neighbor, or maybe you are an active person yourself, stop by your ward, look around, ask questions and participate in the alderman elections. It won't be difficult, but it will be interesting and meaningful - for sure," Donalda Meiželytė, an active resident of Lazdynai district and a member of the capital's Council, invited to participate in the aldermen's elections.
It is expected that the newly elected elders will become real ambassadors of the community, who are the first to learn about the residents' complaints, expectations and wishes. Where communities are not active, the task of the elder is to encourage residents to gather.
