Remigijus Lapinskas, the candidate nominated by the Lithuanian Green Party for mayor of the capital, is angry with the decision to burn much cheaper but more polluting fuel oil instead of gas in the capital. R. Lapinskas claims that this is a consequence of work that was not done four years ago.
"First of all, I would not have allowed such a situation to happen, when the absolutely appropriate, correct technological solution - the biofuel boiler of the Vilnius regenerative power plant - is delayed for the fourth year," said R. Lapinskas at the press conference organized by Elta on Wednesday.
However, he fears, the decision has already been made, so all that remains is to warn the residents of the capital about increased pollution.
"We understand that the decision has already been made, so we can only warn the people of Vilnius that yes, the pollution will be higher. There will be more solid particles from fuel oil. Let's all pray that the wind blows away from the city, not towards the city. On the other hand, in the city itself, there is a lot of mess with transportation, street maintenance, where the same solid particles cause and create conditions for health damage. This decision has been made, it is difficult to criticize it, but, of course, we criticize it anyway, because the fuel oil solution is definitely not the best," said the candidate for mayor of the capital.
He was seconded by the chairperson of the Lithuanian Green Party, Ieva Budraitė. The politician called on the authorities to admit the mistakes made, instead of positioning themselves as the saviors of the population.
"The current leadership of the city of Vilnius presents this decision as welcome and positions itself as the saviors of the residents from the current situation, although what they should do is sprinkle their heads with ashes and admit that this situation has developed due to their mistake," said E. Budraitė.
ELTA reminds that from Saturday, October 22, transportation to Vilnius will be carried out Vilnius heat networks (VŠT) purchased low-sulfur fuel oil. VŠT will start using low-sulfur fuel oil when the air temperature outside will require additional capacity - when all heat points will be fully operational. The demand for low-sulfur fuel oil will also depend on how the independent heat producers supplying heat energy produced from biofuel will operate.
