JAV President Donald Trump congratulated Robert Prevost, the Chicago cardinal who was elected as the new pope on Thursday.
R. Prevost became the first pontiff from the United States and chose the name Leo XIV.
"It's a true honor to know that he is the first American Pope. What a thrill and what a great honor for our Country," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
He said he was looking forward to the opportunity to meet with the Pope.
The US president often clashed with Leon's predecessor, Pope Francis, over his tough policies on migrants. Francis died on Easter Monday.
