in Poland Planning for a new strategic infrastructure project, the Via Pomerania highway, is underway, which is expected to connect Ustka with Kalisz and ensure smooth movement of troops in the event of a crisis or war. Although the road would also be accessible to civilians, its main purpose is to ensure logistical mobility for the needs of the armed forces.
According to the portal "Gazeta.pl", on June 3, the parliamentary working group responsible for the development of this highway presented an expert report, which emphasizes the need to create infrastructure focused on national security and the reception of allied troops. This is one of the parts of the security package "Pact for a Secure Poland - Central Pomerania", which provides for a developed road and logistics network.
Not the only route of military significance
Via Pomerania is not the only project with a military purpose. The Ministry of National Defense (MON) also plans to modernize the access roads to the port of Gdynia, including the Red Road (Droga Czerwona) project and the Kwiatkowski flyover. The aim of these measures is to improve access to the strategic seaport for cargo and military transport.
The new route is planned to pass through settlements such as Ustka, Słupsk, Chojnice, Tuchola, Bydgoszcz, Inowrocław, Konin and Kalisz. The road could allow the simultaneous movement of up to 100 soldiers.
The project is still in the planning stage.
Although the exact route of the future line is not yet known, it is clear that the project is ambitious. According to preliminary estimates, its implementation would take about 10 years and the costs would reach as much as 12 billion zlotys. Nevertheless, the project is considered a priority in the strategic planning of the state defense.
Assessing the current security situation in Europe, especially in light of the war in Ukraine, Poland does not want to be left unprepared. "Via Pomerania" is not only an infrastructure project, but also a clear signal that the country is serious about ensuring security.
However, discussions about alternatives are also ongoing - some experts question whether such a scale is necessary, or whether a similar effect could be achieved at lower costs. However, for now, Via Pomerania remains one of the most important elements of Poland's defense strategy for the next decade.
