"The Lithuanian horseman, the so-called Vytis, is one of the oldest state coats of arms in Europe. We know that the image of Vytis has been used on state flags, coins, and seals since ancient times. For several years in a row, Vytis has been featured on stamps issued by the Lithuanian Post, they illustrate the historical "journey" of the rider Vytis, i.e. the changes in the image of the symbol of the coat of arms of Lithuania in different periods," said Rasa Kruopaitė-Lalienė, Head of the Corporate Affairs Department of the Lithuanian Post.
Images of Vytis used on postage stamps of different denominations from the earliest times (end of the 3th century to the end of the 4th century BC) until the period of the Independent Republic of Lithuania (the XNUMXrd-XNUMXth century of the XNUMXth century) are immortalized. When creating the stamps, the artist I. Balakauskaitė based herself on the images of the horseman printed on the LDK coins kept by the Lithuanian National Museum and the restored war flag of the Augustus II era (reconstruction of BS Gideikaitė (Neverdauskienė)) kept in the collections of the Vytautas Great War Museum.
Together with the new series of 6 stamps, the first-day cover will also appear in circulation. This Saturday, correspondence paid for with the new stamps will be stamped with the date of the first day at the Vilnius Central Post Office.
As the XNUMXth century Ave. Lithuanian chroniclers wrote, Vytis depicted in the state coat of arms symbolizes a mature ruler who can defend his homeland with a sword.
