Before the beginning of the school year, there are exceptional changes in the Vilnius education sector. Today the mayor Remigius Šimašius together with Vice Mayor Vytautas Mitals opened two new schools in the capital - Gabija pro-gymnasium in Pashilaičiai near Perkūnkiemi and Balsias pro-gymnasium.
"During the period of Independence, this is the first time in Lithuania that the city opens two schools at the same time. However, we do not stop there - this is one of the details of major, systemic changes in Vilnius education. No less important are the programs for the development of children's and teachers' creativity and technological literacy, so that free and independent personalities can grow in our city's schools - that is what we strive for," says Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius.
Gabija secondary school - 4 floors, 1000 students
Pupils of the New Gabija pro-gymnasium are probably most looking forward to possible restrictions due to the coronavirus, which could spoil the joy of the settlers - the taming of spaces that smell of paint. After a break of almost ten years, a school for 1000 students was opened in Pashilaičiai with attractive bright rooms, modern furniture and equipment, educational facilities, sports halls and a cozy dining hall.

Within a year and a half, the 4-story, 12 thousand. sq. m building is also adapted for students with mobility disabilities. The building is equipped with modern classrooms for natural sciences, informatics and technology, laboratories, a sports hall of universal dimensions for basketball, football, handball and other sports, a small gym, a spacious assembly hall with a stage and high-quality lighting and sound equipment, a costume room, a make-up room, a library with reading room, art studio, choreography hall, photo laboratory. There is also a place for a school museum in the building.
The pro-gymnasium building was built a few hundred meters from the Gabija gymnasium and will share the territory with a play and sports area for primary classes, sports fields, a bicycle shed, and the Gabija stadium is also being renovated.

"The Gabija Gymnasium is a huge step to ensure excellent conditions for children in the northern districts of Vilnius to learn. We have successfully completed these constructions, built a new school in Balsiai and are finishing the construction of a new annex of the Pavilnis pro-gymnasium. New school buildings will be erected or are already being erected in other districts. The tender will be announced immediately. The opening of the school, which will accommodate 1000 students, is planned for September 2022, 1.

A two-story 1664 sq.m. m area extension, where about 300 students will be able to study. Near Vilnius Joachim Lelevelis Engineering Gymnasium Žirmūnai an extension will be built where about 300 more students will be able to study. Two floors, more than 1500 sq. m. m area extension will connect two existing buildings. A tender for the contract is currently underway.
