After representatives of the magazine "Reitingai" spoke about a larger-than-usual number of ninth-graders flooding Vilnius schools in September, the capital's municipality says that there should be no problems with a shortage of places.
During a conference held on Wednesday, representatives of the magazine "Reitingai" indicated that in September, the ninth grades of the capital's schools will be flooded with students born during the 2010 baby boom. According to the magazine's estimates, there should be almost 7 thousand of them.
True, according to Vilnius city municipalities representative Gabrielius Grubinskas, it is estimated that this number will be somewhat lower – in the 2025-2026 school year, about 6,4 thousand ninth-graders are expected in classes, although, according to him, if necessary, schools could accept up to 6 students.
"It is likely that in the 2025–2026 school year there will be about 6400 ninth-graders in Vilnius. 235 classrooms are planned, which will accommodate up to 6750 students. Currently, the municipality has received almost 6000 applications from future ninth-graders to be admitted to schools," reads the response sent to Elta.
"Vilnius city municipality", taking into account data from student and resident registers, annually reviews the territories assigned to schools and, if necessary, adjusts them. It is worth noting that admission in Vilnius is primarily carried out on a territorial basis, and only then are the remaining free places offered to children living in other parts of the city," explained a representative of the municipality.
According to G. Grubinskas, if, for objective reasons, students living in the school's service area do not receive an invitation to study at a school in that area, they are offered the option of choosing other nearby schools with available places.
ELTA reminds that on Wednesday, the education and science magazine "Reitingai" presented the latest rankings of the country's educational institutions, compiled according to different educational indicators and student achievements.
During the event, magazine journalist Jonė Kučinskaitė noted that the capital may face difficulties in preparing for the new school year, as a larger than usual number of students will apply for ninth grade.
"Vilnius is particularly facing a problem this year, how to accommodate, for example, the children of the 2010 birth boom - there are over 7 thousand of them. This year, I think that in June, journalists will also have something to write about and talk about, because it will be really difficult to accommodate over 7 thousand ninth-graders in both selective and non-selective schools," said J. Kučinskaitė.
