Green spaces and the need to restore the connection with nature occupy an increasingly large part in the life of Vilnius - parks and public spaces are renovated so that one can enjoy a natural oasis in the middle of the city. "Vilnius development company" is starting a new project - it will help schools to equip green areas so that children can spend more time outdoors and learn to take care of plants.
"The project aims to create a pleasant educational environment in schools, where children would be taught to respect nature through educational activities, understand how to protect it, take care of it," says Irena Čepukoitė, project manager of "Vilnius Development Company".
During the summer, it is planned to design greenery at the entrances of educational institutions, so that in the fall, children returning after vacation, with the help of pedagogues, integrating the disciplines of biology, technology, and nature, can examine greenery planting projects, plan planting/sowing works and plant plants. The goal of "Vilnius development company" is to bring together the entire school community, therefore we invite parents, teachers and school administration, as well as neighbors of the institution - both residents and businesses - to join the project," says I. Čepukoitė.
The green areas are planned to be planted with undemanding and easy-to-maintain plants - annuals and perennials. If possible, beds will be installed where vegetables, berries, and herbs will be grown.
Currently, the form of education is becoming extremely popular in the world, when children are encouraged to grow and take care of crops themselves. In this way, a person is brought closer to living nature from an early age, taught to love it. "Our project also aims to familiarize children with biodiversity up close - to build nests, insect hotels, birdbaths so that children can observe," says the project manager.
The first pilot projects for nurturing the school environment will be carried out at the J. Basanavičius high school, St. Kristoforos pro-gymnasium and Sietuva pro-gymnasium. "Vilnius development company" also advises the institution on the installation of a temporary outdoor classroom, so that students spend as much time as possible outside.
