The Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Wednesday that it is conducting a public interest investigation into the circumstances surrounding the construction of the private school of Austėja Landsbergienė, the wife of Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielias Landsbergis, in Vilnius Kalnėnai.
The investigation is carried out by public interest defense prosecutors of the Vilnius District Prosecutor's Office.
"We can confirm that the Public Interest Protection Department of the Vilnius District Prosecutor's Office is indeed collecting material related to potentially violated public interest. This is material that is needed to make a decision on whether there is a basis for applying measures to protect the public interest or not, whether the public interest has been violated or not," Elena Martinonienė, spokesperson of the General Prosecutor's Office, told BNS.
The investigation is being conducted after receiving an appeal from opposition members of the Seimas, Algirdas Stončaitis, Agnes Širinskienė and Julias Sabatauskas.
Opposition politicians suspect that A. Landsbergienė's business was allowed to build a private school where a state educational institution was planned.
In September, the weekly "Lietuvos rytas" announced that in the detailed plan approved by the capital city council 11 years ago, a 13,4 ha public area was allocated on the site of the future school, where it was planned to build a sports field with a stadium.
However, in 2018, the municipality ordered to adjust the detailed plan of this territory and to change the boundaries of four large plots, the land use method, and the building density.
