The rapidly growing Vilnius is distinguished by the largest number of students (64 thousand) and will continue to grow - the analysis carried out by the municipality showed that by 2025 the number of students will increase by approximately 14 thousand, that is, it will reach at least 78 thousand. Next week, the City Council will decide whether to open another 8 new schools in Vilnius in the next few years. This is only part of the overall planned transformation of schools.
Vilnius city municipality is already preparing for growth and has planned to reorganize the school network in such a way that it is convenient for all Vilnius residents to access a good school closer to their place of residence, the conditions for quality education are ensured, and the funds for education are used rationally and efficiently.
"The population of Vilnius is growing, and the number of children is also growing very rapidly - there are almost twice as many three-year-olds as seventeen-year-olds, so we face a considerable challenge - to create conditions for children to go to school near their homes. Seeing all these trends, we plan to open as many as 2025 new schools in the city by 8: 2 kindergarten-schools, 1 primary school, 3 pro-gymnasiums and 1 gymnasium. We hope that the members of the city council will approve this ambitious and carefully prepared plan," said Tomas Gulbinas, the deputy mayor and head of the school network transformation working group.
Schools are established where they are most needed
It is planned that new educational institutions will be built in those districts that are expanding very rapidly. Two kindergarten-schools - in Perkūnkiemi and Tarande, one primary school - In Pilaite. The aim is to establish 3 pro-gymnasiums - in Antakalni, Bajorai and Pavilnyi (Signatari quarter). A contract has already been signed with the builders of the gymnasium in Tolminkiemios Street (Pilaitei), and in the near future another gymnasium is planned to open in Verkių seniority.
About 1000 students will study in the new gymnasium in Pilaite, Jerusalem 300 in the annex of the pro-gymnasium, 600 in the Mykolas Romeris pro-gymnasium, and 500 children (300 primary school children and 200 kindergarten children) will attend the school-kindergarten in Perkūnkiemi. All these projects have already started, but the stages of implementation are different.
It is planned that 500 children (300 primary school children and 200 kindergarten children) will be able to study in the future school-kindergarten in Tarande. There are 700 children in the high school in Bajorai, 800 in the high school in Verkii, 400 in the primary school in Pilaite, and even 800 in the high school in Pavilny. According to the current plans, the secondary school in Bajorai and the primary school in Pilaite could open their doors in 2024, other educational institutions - in 2025.
Municipal education specialists, council members, architects, lawyers, directors of Vilnius schools worked on the reorganization of the school network.
The final decision on the transformation of the school network will be taken by the City Council at the next meeting, which will be held on March 31.
