On the night from Saturday to Sunday, the name of Mykolas Alekna shook the world of athletics. The 22-year-old Lithuanian JAV started the season with a powerful performance - not only winning the competition confidently, but also breaking two records.
Alekna was considered the main favorite at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in California - and he justified this status with great success. On his second attempt, the Vilnius native threw the discus 70.09 m - not only the best result in the world this season, but also a new Atlantic Coast Conference record.
Mykolas' results in this meet speak for themselves: 65.85 m, 70.09 m, 67.68 m, 68.73 m, 68.86 m, 70.01 m. Even several throws exceeded the 68-meter mark, which indicates a stable and high athletic form.
The advantage is more than convincing
Alekna, representing the University of Berkeley, beat his nearest rival by as much as 18.86 meters. Another Berkeley student, Jared Freeman, took silver with a best result of 52,04 m. Charlie Dang (51,00 m) was third. All the medalists are also from the University of Berkeley, which only further highlights the sports dominance of this educational institution in the discus throw event.
Mykolas Alekna is finishing his senior year at Berkeley this year, but it seems like his track and field season is just getting underway. An impressive start to the season not only boosts the athlete's morale, but also sends a message to his competitors - this Lithuanian is ready to stand on the podium again.
