The 36 female pentathletes starting at the Paris Games begin a desperate battle, after which half of the participants will end this Olympic cycle one day earlier than the 18 strongest, who will fight for medals on Sunday.
For the first time in the Olympic pentathlon tournament held according to the new format, all athletes are divided into two groups of 18. Nine Olympians from each group will enter the finals.
Laura Asadauskaitė-Zadneprovskienė, who is participating in the Games for the fifth time in her career, will compete in group A, while Gintarė Venčkauskaitė, who is tasting the bread of an Olympian for the third time, will compete in group B.
In the main fencing round held yesterday, both Lithuanians won 16 out of 35 duels and have 205 points each. These count towards the semi-final and, if the athlete gets there, the final, so they are very valuable. But even more valuable may be the points that will be awarded in the equestrian event, which the modern pentathlon will say goodbye to immediately after the Paris Games.
In pentathlon, competition riding is called a lottery, because the result depends not only on the skill of the athlete, but also on the horse that the athlete receives by lottery. It takes just 20 minutes to get to know your new partner.
The equestrian course consists of 12 obstacles, but 15 jumps are required. Each athlete has 300 points before riding. That's how many you can win if you don't drop a single obstacle and don't exceed the time limit. 7 points are deducted for each obstacle dropped, minus 10 - for stopping, 1 point - for each exceeded second of riding time. When a stubborn horse doesn't jump the hurdle at all or drops the rider, it's possible to end up with no points at all. Then the battle in the multiplayer is already over.
An additional fencing round will take place shortly after the equestrian competition. In it, the last two ranked athletes meet first. The winner moves on to face the higher-ranked opponent, so the last one standing in these fights has to face the overall leader. Two points are awarded for a victory.
Later, the Olympians will travel to the swimming pool, where they will compete in the 200 m freestyle event. Here the starting point is 2 min. 30 sec. the result. An athlete who completes the distance in the same or less time gets 250 points. A point is deducted for each second over this time, and if you swim faster, each second adds one point to the saver.
And finally, he will stand at the starting line of the combined running and shooting event. All points are converted to seconds before the combined event. The leader of the competition starts first, and the others - at such an interval, how many seconds are behind him. Female athletes need to complete 5 laps of 600 m each and extinguish five target lights four times in the shooting range with a laser gun as quickly as possible. True, and not hitting all targets after 50 seconds. an Olympian can run further.
All events are planned to be completed in one and a half hours - this is the advantage of the new format, which helps to make this sport as attractive as possible to the spectators.
Bicycle track
Men's keirin (Vasilijus Lendel)
- 18.44:XNUMX p.m. The first stage
- 20.21:XNUMX p.m. Consolation race
Vasilijus Lendelis will start the second event of his first career Olympic Games. He and 29 other cyclists will race in the keirin, a group sprint.
In the keirin event (8 laps), cyclists start after the leader on a scooter, occupying positions determined by lottery, and cannot overtake him. When the speed of the scooter reaches 45 km per hour, the leader leaves and the athletes start a sprint.
In the first stage, the participants are divided into five races. Two athletes from each will advance to the next round. The rest will compete in the consolation competition on the same evening, where two more athletes will advance to tomorrow's quarter-finals from the four heats.
V.Lendelis started the Olympic Games with a sprint event, in which he took 15th place.
