Vilnius city municipalities in plans - National Stadium to establish a new Mammoth Park in the vicinity. The park should connect Šeškina with the central part of the city, and people could enter the National Stadium from the side of Ukmergė Street. Few people know that the name Mammoth Park is not accidental, after all more than 65 years ago. The biggest mammoth in the Baltic countries was found in Vilnius.
In the summer of 1957, at the intersection of Šilo and Smelių streets, during the sewer construction works, workers discovered mammoth bones. The executor of the works informed the TSR Academy of Sciences about the bones found at a depth of 3,5 m. Archaeological work began, during which archaeologists discovered: the lower jaw of a mammoth, a vertebral column, legs and other bones of the animal.
The remains of the Vilnius mammoth are kept in the Tad Ivanauskas Zoological Museum in Kaunas. When we get there, we will see the mammoth's jaw, its upper teeth and legs.
in Antakalni the found mammoth is the largest paleontological find in the Baltic region. It is also the youngest mammoth ever found in Lithuania with the most complete skeleton found in all Baltic countries. The biological age of the mammoth could have been about 70 years.
In Vilnius, mammoths were found in a couple of other places.
In the planned Mammoth Park, which preserves the history of the Ice Age and mammoths, an educational trail, landscape viewpoints could be established, and the surrounding area is adapted for convenient access to the park by various means of travel. We wrote more about this project here.
