The linden tree of Sapiegi Park is the oldest linden tree in Vilnius, growing in Antakalni located in the park of the Sapiega Palace (former Sapiega Hospital), near the magnificent entrance gate at Antakalnis Street. The park of the residence belonging to the Sapiegos is the oldest and one of the most striking examples of a regular geometric baroque park in Lithuania. The wall surrounding the park helped to preserve not only the old trees of the park, but also the radial layout of the park common in the Baroque era.
This July since 1996 May 29 is Vilnius city municipalities protected botanical natural heritage site. There is an information stand near the tree.
Tree type: small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata Mill.) Height: 28 m. Trunk circumference at a height of 1,3 m: 4,40 m. Age: about 350 years (in other sources - about 300 years). Small-leaved linden is a popular woody tree that is common almost throughout Europe. The leaves are dark green, 4-8 cm long, resembling a heart shape. Mažalapė linden blossoms around the 20th year of its life. An adult tree has about 60 thousand. rings. It blooms with fragrant yellow flowers in June and July. Bees collect up to 50 kg of nectar from the flowers of one large tree.
In the spring of 2014, the old linden of the Vilnius region was managed: the top of the tree was shaped, dead branches and worthless growths were removed.
In 2016, a new information stand was built at the expense of visitors in Sapiegiu Park near the old tree.
