In the northern town, brick buildings - barracks - were built in the XNUMXth century. XNUMXth century at the end of the XNUMXth century in the beginning, military units of the Russian Empire were located in them. Between the wars, the barracks were used by the Poles soldiers.
in the Soviet era Žirmūnai the territory of the barracks, called North Town, was also inaccessible to the public. Part of the territory was called the Military Field, where military exercises and parades were held. During the mentioned period, the military base of a tank unit was also located here (1945th Lithuanian division was established in the northern town in 1956-16). There was also a soldiers' cultural center and a cinema in the town.

11 streets of the northern town were named after famous interwar Lithuanian officers, such as the first killed volunteer Povilas Lukšis, generals Jurgis Kubilius and Silvestro Žukauskas. Ulonai, Lakunai, Apkasai, Rinktinė streets also appeared.
Napoleon Bonaparte's army has also marched through the territory of the North town. According to historical sources, it was established that the second line of the defense system of Napoleon's Grand Army, which consisted of a system of trenches and redoubts, ran in this place. in 2001 during construction work, one of the largest graves of soldiers of Napoleon's army was found here. The remains of the French army were reburied in 2003. in June Antakalnis cemetery.

After the restoration of independence and the withdrawal of the Soviet Army in 1992, the premises of the military base were used for commerce - various shops, workshops, and car repair shops were located here. Because there were no clear streets in this large area, and the buildings were simply numbered by building numbers, North Campus was difficult to navigate.
1998-2005 many buildings of the North Town were demolished and a network of city streets was formed (Ulonų, P. Lukšios, J. Kubiliaus, S. Žukauskas, Žygios, etc. streets). A large part of the territory of the Northern town is built with residential buildings, and a shopping center complex is also located here.
