Radio engineering and electronics are industries that have occupied a very important place in the Lithuanian economy since the post-war years. Specialists were trained for them by technical higher schools of the republic and Vilnius University. In Vilnius alone, there were large factory organizations that also had scientific names: "Venta", "Sigma", "Postbox no. 555". Many technological organizations in the Soviet Union were classified. The Vilnius factory was a leader in the fields of oscillography, medical equipment and super high frequency radio technology.
The Liepkalnis radio technical battalion is located near the Minsk highway, in the forests, the territory is interspersed between the Minsk highway and Kalnėnai collective gardens, occupying a considerable area - almost 2 hectares. The territory includes a security post, warehouses, a gas station, military and administrative buildings, and a bunker where airspace surveillance took place. This battalion has a longer name - 2308th separate radiotechnical battalion, military unit number (k/d no): 75285, call sign "шлях", belonging to the 81st radiotechnical brigade, which survives to this day.
The history of this unit begins in 1958, when the 5th radiotechnical regiment was established in Kaliningrad. In 1974, the regiment was expanded to the 81st Radio Technical Brigade, which has survived to this day. The battalions and separate companies of this radio technical brigade were scattered all over the Baltic region, in wooded hilly areas, including Vilnius, near the Minsk highway - powerful radars and radar stations monitoring the air space stood on artificially filled embankments and natural hills. They were the first to see airspace violators in the vicinity of Vilnius. The information immediately traveled to the main headquarters of the Baltic region - in the town of Mucienieki near Riga, and from there to smaller headquarters of anti-aircraft brigades, such as "Forsazh" in Riga or our headquarters in Visoriai, called "Откол", which in turn gave attack orders to brigade divisions in Mickūnai. , in Lentvary and Kalina armed with anti-aircraft missiles. In 1993, after the withdrawal of the Russian military, the territory was handed over to the Lithuanian army. It is difficult to judge what was carried out in it later - most likely exercises, as in many units left by the Soviets
