It is planned to start repairing more than 220 km of roads: where the work will be carried out

Via Lietuva, the company responsible for the development and maintenance of state roads, reports that more than 90 km of trunk, regional and district roads are currently being maintained in Lithuania. In addition, public procurement and contracting works for more than 130 km of roads are currently underway or will soon begin - including asphalting of gravel roads and simple or major road repairs.

"We take care not only of the main highways, but also of convenient transportation in the regions - those roads that people use to get to work, schools or medical institutions every day. This year, great attention is also being paid to asphalting gravel roads - an additional 20 million euros have been allocated for this. We understand that good transportation is important for every community, so the work will take place practically throughout Lithuania," says Minister of Transport and Communications Eugenijus Sabutis.

Martynas Gedaminskas, CEO of Via Lietuva, emphasizes that this year the company is implementing important projects to modernize highways and bridges, as well as to improve connectivity between regions.

"Together, we aim to ensure safer infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, and to prepare for the needs of military mobility. We want road users to have high-quality, safe and modern road infrastructure," says M. Gedaminskas.

In total, construction works are currently underway on 48 km of main roads, 39 km of regional roads and 4,8 km of regional roads. In addition, construction works or public procurement under the "Design and Build" principle are already underway or will soon be initiated for more than 134 km of roads - 65 km of gravel roads asphalting, 32 km of regional roads simple repairs, 3 km of regional roads major repairs, 17 km of main roads simple repairs, 17 km of regional roads repairs.

A total of 22,4 km of main roads should be repaired this year: work on the A12 Riga–Šiauliai–Tauragė–Kaliningrad road was completed in April, and three more road sections on the A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Kaliningrad road will be repaired by the end of the year.Klaipeda and two sections of the A2 Vilnius–Panevėžys road.

Intensive construction work is also underway on the A5 Kaunas–Marijampolė–Suwalki road, section 85 to 97 km. By the end of this year, it is planned to complete the reconstruction of 12 km, repair or install 7 bridges, 10 roundabouts, and more than 31 km of connecting roads on this road.

Work is also progressing rapidly on a nearly 43 km stretch of the A14 Vilnius–Utena highway. It is planned to be completed by summer next year, and the stretch from 21,5 to 28,4 km will be opened to traffic this year.

In April, major repairs were completed on the regional road of state importance No. 4727. Trakai–Lentvaris–Mūrinė Vokė, section from 5,3 to 6,1 km. In May, it is planned to complete major repair works on road No. 4707 Grigiškės–Lentvaris–Dobrovolė, section from 5,2 km to 6,3 km. In the near future, ordinary repair works on road No. 2505 Leipalingis–Kapčiamiestis–Kauknoris, section from 18,1 to 28,1 km will begin. They are planned to be completed in 2026.

This year, it is planned to repair 32,6 km of state-important regional roads. In addition, public procurement is underway for the repair of 32 km of regional roads by replacing their surfaces (a total of 13 projects). The work is planned to be completed by the end of this year.

In March, the capital repair of road No. 154 Šiauliai–Gruzdžiai–Naujoji Akmenė in the section from 43,9 to 47,4 km was completed. By June, the simple repair of road No. 211 Linkuva–Žeimelis in the section from 18,3 to 21 km will be completed, and in July, the capital repair of road No. 140 Kaunas–Zapyškis–Šakiai in the section from 17,9 to 18,7 km should be implemented. At the same time, the capital repair works on road No. 221 Vievis–Aukštadvaris in the section from 3,3 to 17,7 km and on road No. 191 Paliūniškis–Vabalninkas in the section from 9 to 20,4 km should be completed by September.

In 2025, much attention is also being paid to military mobility projects. Intensive work will continue at the Rūdininkai training ground - in the third quarter of this year, it is planned to complete the repair of sections of road No. 176 Pirčiupiai–Jašiūnai from 9,5 to 14,3 km and from 21,8 to 26,5 km.

Currently, contracting work is underway on two gravel road paving projects, which are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. Public procurement for the paving of 65 km of gravel roads is also being initiated.

An order signed by the Minister of Transport and Communications E. Sabutis has created conditions for cheaper construction of state gravel roads since April of this year: the rules for asphalting them have become more flexible, providing for the possibility of designing and installing simplified structures on gravel roads. Thus, with the same budget, it will be possible to asphalt more kilometers of gravel roads than before.

There are 13 bridges being maintained on both major and minor roads of state importance, the vast majority of which are in critical condition. The repair work on another 11 bridges is at the stage of public procurement procedures - if contracts are successfully signed, the work would begin this summer and end next year or in 2027. AB Via Lietuva will continue bridge maintenance work - it is planned to initiate public procurement for the design or construction of another 22 bridges by the end of the year.

In 2025, it is planned to install 19 km of new pedestrian and bicycle paths, and public procurement is also being initiated for the construction of more than 50 km of pedestrian and bicycle paths, which will begin this year and be completed by the middle of next year. Currently, 25 km of pedestrian and bicycle paths are being designed, and design services are being purchased for more than 33 km of pedestrian and bicycle path projects.

In addition, the procurement of contract works for the renovation of more than 100 pedestrian crossings in various regions of the country is being initiated.
