Wednesday, June 11, aviation news portal Malta Aviation Outlook announced that businessmen Einar Orn Olafsson and Elias Skuli Skulason have submitted a formal offer to acquire all shares in Icelandic low-cost airline Fly Play. The move could mean not only a change of ownership but also a fundamental change in the company's direction.
According to the information released, Olafsson and Skulason intend to transfer all Fly Play aircraft to the Maltese Aviation Certificate of Operation (AOC), while simultaneously terminating the Icelandic AOC. This would mean that the company would no longer officially operate as an Icelandic airline, but would become an air carrier registered in the jurisdiction of Malta.
One of the most important changes, which was reported by businessmen, is that Fly Play plans to completely abandon transatlantic flights to North America. Instead, the company will focus on leisure routes in Europe, paying particular attention to the Polish and Lithuanian markets.
This may mean that Vilnius or other Lithuanian airports In the future, you may see more routes with this low-cost carrier, which is already known for its attractive prices.
Currently, Fly Play from Vilnius airport operates direct flights to the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays.
Fly Play currently uses Airbus A320 family aircraft, and flights from Iceland have been diverted to both JAV, as well as to various European cities. However, it seems that the new owners are seeking to transform the company's business model into one that is more tourism-oriented, abandoning complex transatlantic operations.
