Vilnius city municipalities Today, the Council approved that the construction of Gariūnau street near the Gariūnau intersection should be started. The procedure for taking plot 48 for public use. Although the territory is small (5,5 acres), it is important in order to start the second stage of the reconstruction of the Gariūnai intersection and to install a viaduct over Gariūnai Street. The viaduct will ensure uninterrupted traffic and help avoid traffic jams.
About 50-67 thousand people pass by Gariūnai Street per day. vehicles. The intersection regulated by traffic lights does not ensure sufficient throughput and traffic jams often form at this location. Therefore, the transformation of these streets was foreseen in the 1999 plans.
The first stage of reconstruction of the Gariūnai intersection was completed in the autumn of last year. During it, a roundabout with Paneriškių Street was installed, rain and water drainage networks were reconstructed, street lighting was installed, and pedestrian and bicycle paths were built.
In the second stage, it is planned to reconstruct the intersection of Gariūnai and Paneriškių streets, regulated by one-level traffic lights, into a two-level intersection by building a viaduct.
During the reconstruction of the intersection, all traffic lights with left turns will be removed, only right turns will be possible. This will ensure uninterrupted traffic flow. By increasing traffic capacity, traffic jams will be avoided, drivers' time will be saved, and greenhouse gases will be emitted less into the environment.
It is planned to install a pedestrian overpass with stairs and a slipway over the former intersection, and install bicycle paths. This will avoid intersections between pedestrian and car traffic, as both pedestrians and cars will cross the junction more safely and quickly.
For the approach to the new viaduct, it is planned to reconstruct the existing streets, reorganize the two existing ones - Paneriškių street and Gariūnai cul-de-sac, and install two new small roundabouts.
Public transport two bus stops with platforms are planned for the stop, choosing their location as close as possible to the expected greatest centers of attraction.
The intersection project is planned to be prepared within two years. It is estimated that the installation could begin in 2026, and the end is planned - by 2028.
