An important milestone has been reached in the Džiaugsmo Street reconstruction project. in New Vilnius - Vilnius city municipality issued a building permit. This paves the way for street maintenance work that will improve connectivity, traffic safety, and environmental quality.
"The reconstruction of Džiaugsmo Street is a long-awaited change for the residents of Naujoji Vilnia. The installation of bicycle and pedestrian paths, crossings, and lighting will ensure safe and comfortable movement. We are working so that residents of all districts of the capital can enjoy modern street infrastructure," says the Mayor of Vilnius Valdas Benkunskas.
Currently, the 3 km long section of Džiaugsmo Street (from Paeglinės g. to Pergalės g.) is not adapted for pedestrians and cyclists. It does not have pedestrian sidewalks or a bicycle path, there is no street lighting, and there is no rainwater collection system. For this reason, it is dangerous for road users, especially pedestrians, to move along the street, especially at night.
During the reconstruction, this street will be substantially improved, installing elements necessary for safe traffic. It is planned to install new pedestrian sidewalks on both sides of the road and build a separate bicycle path. The street will also be equipped with modern lighting, a 2,3 km long rainwater collection system, illuminated pedestrian crossings and new public transport stops. After updating the infrastructure, the Džiaugsmo Street section will become more convenient and safer for all traffic participants.
"When preparing this project, we aim to combine infrastructure development with environmental protection - to modernize the street, while preserving as many mature trees as possible. After the reconstruction, the three-kilometer section of Džiaugsmo Street will become much safer and more convenient: pedestrians and cyclists will be able to travel on new paths, and public transport passengers will be able to use new stops. We believe that these changes will significantly contribute to improving the quality of life of local residents," adds Laura Joffė, head of the Vilnius Development Company.
When designing the reconstruction, special attention is paid to the protection of mature greenery. The solutions for arranging the street carriageway and constructing paths are coordinated with the trees growing nearby, in order to avoid unnecessary felling. If, however, some trees have to be removed due to the implementation of the project, new ones will be planted in the reconstructed section of the street, if possible.
The project for Džiaugsmo Street was prepared by the Design Department team of the Vilnius Development Company.
