Vilnius city municipality signed a contract for the reconstruction of Vokiečių Street. One of the main streets of the capital's old town will be renovated by UAB "KRS", which won the tender.
Vokiečių Street will have its pavement renewed and high-quality public spaces created. The work is planned to begin in mid-summer. The work will be carried out in stages - the first one begins at the intersection of Vokiečių and Dominikonų streets.
"The reconstruction of Vokiečių Street is one of the most complex and significant projects for the renovation of public spaces in the capital. With it, we aim not only to preserve historical memory, but also to create a comfortable, attractive and vibrant urban space for residents and city guests. I am glad that we have managed to reconcile the needs of heritage protection, the local community and the city and are ready to start work," says the Mayor of Vilnius Valdas Benkunskas
The street will be reconstructed according to the idea of "Strassen-Platz" by the winning architectural competition of the AIMM architectural studio. The project was prepared in consultation with residents.
The renovated street will retain signs commemorating the rich history of the area. The pavement pattern will mark the street structure of past periods, the lines of paving stones in a different shade will mark the outlines of the walls of historic buildings, and the addresses of the surviving buildings will be engraved in the pavement.
The sculpture of Barbora Radvilaitė will remain in the same place, but the hill on which it stands will be replaced - it will be covered with the same surface as the renovated street. Taking into account the wishes of residents, a swimming pool will be preserved on the route of the historic Žydų street, and an interactive fountain is also planned.
Although car traffic will remain on Vokiečių Street, the main focus will be on pedestrians. A continuous surface with small height differences is planned for the street, which will help create the impression of a pedestrian zone. As before, 37 parking spaces and 9 service spaces are planned for the street.
When renovating the street, the conditions for existing trees are improved – the height of the trees is increased. New planting is planned in the areas of former inner courtyards, where there are no foundations of historical buildings.
The street renovation work is planned to be completed by the end of 2026.
